Barista training is priced very differently depending on where you sit. A US roastery academy, a London coffee school and a Shanghai training centre can all teach the same SCA syllabus and charge very different amounts for it. This guide puts named providers side by side, with the fee each one publishes, so you can see what a barista course actually costs in 2026.
As of October 2026: every fee below was read from the provider’s own website between 22 and 23 October 2026. Where a provider does not publish a price, the table says “On request”. Conversions use the European Central Bank reference rate published 23 October 2026 (via Frankfurter): US$1 = ¥6.6702 = £0.74804. Rounded to the nearest dollar.
How SCA barista courses are structured
Most professional courses in all three countries follow the Specialty Coffee Association (SCA) Coffee Skills Program. The SCA lists Barista Skills at three levels, and says trainers, not the SCA, set the course price (SCA Education: Courses).
| Level | Duration listed by SCA | Points (legacy 100-point Diploma) | Typical format |
|---|---|---|---|
| Introduction to Coffee | 4–6 hours | 10 | Half day, no practical exam |
| Barista Skills Foundation | 7 hours | 5 | One day, written exam |
| Barista Skills Intermediate | 14 hours | 10 | Two days, written + practical |
| Barista Skills Professional | 21 hours | 25 | Three days, written + practical |
One change matters here. The SCA says the 100-point Diploma system ended in 2023; existing diplomas stay valid and earned points now count toward the newer Skills Diplomas, such as the Café Diploma, which requires all three Barista Skills levels plus other certificates (SCA Skills Diplomas). So the 5/10/25 points still appear on trainer pages, but the certificate itself is what employers check.
On top of tuition, every learner pays the SCA an enrolment fee, which depends on the learner’s country group. The USA, UK and China all sit in the same top pricing group (SCA pricing model). UK schools quote that fee as €50 for most courses and €25 for Introduction to Coffee (Prufrock).
Barista course fees in the USA
| Provider | Location | Course | Fee (Oct 2026) |
|---|---|---|---|
| Boot Coffee Campus | San Rafael, CA | SCA Barista Foundation / Intermediate | $595 / $1,295 (SCA exam fee included; $300 off when booked together) |
| Coffee Project NY | Long Island City, NY | SCA Barista Skills (Foundation; Foundation + Intermediate) | $595 to $1,495 |
| Coffee Project NY | Long Island City, NY | Barista Intensive (3 hours, non-SCA) | $300 |
| Cafe Moto Academy | San Diego, CA | SCA Barista Skills Foundation | $645 (SCA membership required to register) |
| Counter Culture Coffee | Training centres in several US cities | Public classes (e.g. Espresso at Home) | On request (priced per class on its Eventbrite listings) |
| Wake Tech Community College | Raleigh, NC | Barista & Cafe Training (24 contact hours, no certification) | $165 |
| Barista Hustle | Online | Barista One (lifetime access + BH certificate) | US$149 |
The pattern is clear: an SCA Foundation day at a specialty roaster costs roughly $600, and the Intermediate level roughly doubles that. Community college classes are far cheaper but do not lead to an SCA certificate. Boot Coffee is one of the few US campuses that says the SCA exam fee is already in the price, so check that line wherever you book.
Barista course fees in the UK
| Provider | Location | Course | Fee (Oct 2026) | ≈ USD |

| London School of Coffee | Wandsworth, London | SCA Barista Foundation / Intermediate / Professional | £285 / £529 / £870 | $381 / $707 / $1,163 |
| London School of Coffee | Wandsworth, London | Barista Beginner Masterclass (1 day, non-SCA) | £199 | $266 |
| Prufrock Barista Training Centre | Leather Lane, London | SCA Barista Skills Foundation / Intermediate / Professional | £275 / £495 / £715 (+ €50 SCA fee) | $368 / $662 / $956 |

| Barista Hustle | Online | Barista One | US$149 (≈ £111) | $149 |
UK SCA Foundation prices cluster tightly between £275 and £300. The real difference is the small print: London School of Coffee says its Foundation price excludes the SCA student fee of €50 (about £45), payable after the course, and Prufrock says the same for its €50 enrolment fee. Add that to compare like with like.
Barista course fees in China
| Provider | City | Course | Fee (Oct 2026) | ≈ USD |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Jascaffe (王力咖啡学堂) | Shanghai (Songjiang) | SCA Barista Skills Foundation + Intermediate | ¥6,000 tuition + ¥1,800 + ¥2,400 exam fees = ¥10,200 | $1,529 |
| Jascaffe (王力咖啡学堂) | Shanghai (Songjiang) | SCA Barista Skills Professional | ¥6,000 + ¥2,700 exam fee = ¥8,700 | $1,304 |
| Jascaffe (王力咖啡学堂) | Shanghai (Songjiang) | Weekend one-day class (non-SCA) | ¥1,280 | $192 |
| 非常咖 Coffee Training Academy | Changzhou, Jiangsu | SCA Barista Foundation / Intermediate | ¥1,980 / ¥3,280, certificate optional at ¥1,200 each | $297 / $492 (+$180) |

| Bloom Coffee College (铂澜咖啡学院) | Beijing, Guangzhou, Wuhan, Dalian | SCA Barista Foundation + Intermediate | On request | – |
Chinese schools often split tuition from the SCA exam and certificate fee, which makes headline prices look lower than they are. Jascaffe in Shanghai lists them separately; 非常咖 in Changzhou sells the Foundation day at ¥1,980 without the certificate. Many schools also sell 4-day Foundation + Intermediate packages rather than single levels. If a price looks unusually low, ask whether the SCA certificate is included.
Side-by-side: SCA Barista Skills Foundation
| Country | Published range (Foundation) | ≈ USD | Notes |
|---|---|---|---|
| USA | $595–$645 | $595–$645 | Boot Coffee includes the SCA exam fee |
| UK | £275–£300 | $368–$401 | Some schools add €50 SCA fee |
| China (mainland) | ¥1,980–¥3,180 | $297–$477 | Lower figure excludes the ¥1,200 certificate fee |
| Online (any country) | US$149 | $149 | Barista Hustle certificate, not SCA |
India for comparison: SCA Barista Skills Foundation in Bengaluru is listed at ₹24,000 + taxes to ₹25,300 incl. GST (about $253–$266 at ₹94.94 per dollar), the lowest of the four markets. See the full fee table in barista courses and Q Grader in India, under its fees section.
How to choose a barista course
- Decide if you need the certificate. Many cafés hire without one and train on the job. If you only want skills, a non-SCA beginner day (£99–£199, $165–$300) teaches the same hands-on basics for less.
- Compare the full price, not the headline. Ask whether the SCA enrolment fee and exam fee are included. In the UK it can add about £45; in China, ¥1,200 or more.
- Check class size and machine time. Practical time on a commercial machine is the main thing you pay for. Schools quoting a cap (London School of Coffee says no more than 8 on Foundation) are easier to judge.
- Book Foundation and Intermediate together only if you will use both. Bundles save money (Boot Coffee takes $300 off) but Intermediate assumes some bar experience.
- Look up the trainer. SCA courses must be taught by an Authorised SCA Trainer; you can confirm one in the SCA directory before paying.
- Weigh travel against fees. If you live in India, a Bengaluru course plus no flight usually beats a cheaper-looking course abroad.
If you are still deciding whether to train at all, start with how to become a barista and the core barista skills you can practise at home. For certifications beyond barista work, see the coffee certification comparison.
